Greetings Florida Herb Society members,
We thought since we are not able to meet this month due to our current situation, we would post our Herb of the Month and coming soon, other interesting Herb related content.
Herb of the Month: Dandelion
This beautiful bitter herb brings back so many childhood memories:
Do you like butter? Put a dandelion under your chin and if it glows yellow, yep sure sign.
Does he love me, does he not? The flower petals would surely give the correct answer if plucked appropriately.
And the glorious silver tufted fruit orb just begging to be blown into the wind carrying our wishes to far away places.
Little did I know as a child this plant has many healing actions. We present to you a materia medica on dandelion.
Scientific name: Taraxacum officinale
Common name: Dandelion
Family: Asteraceae
The root is an effective liver tonic that may help detoxify the liver and increases bile flow from the gallbladder. Also provides relief from skin and joint disorders. Also a mild laxative. Can be taken as an infusion.
The leaf is a safe and effective diuretic and a natural source of potassium. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads and are best enjoyed with other greens.
Dandelion is a powerhouse so if you are fortunate to come upon one enjoy it and if flowering blow it's fruits into the wind to continue its plant ally journey.
